Next setback: That's probably it for Alex Schwazer

Alex Schwazer was banned for 2016 years in 8 because of a positive doping test. The Kalch Olympic champion then repeatedly protested his innocence and spoke of a manipulated doping test. In the summer of 2019, he had serious hopes when it came to light in a trial before the Bolzano regional court that Schwazer's DNA sample had an anomaly. Manipulation was therefore no longer ruled out. With these findings, the Schwazer clan went to the Swiss Federal Court, which, as the highest court in the Swiss Confederation, can overturn the rulings of the International Court of Arbitration for Sports and thus also Schwazer's ban. However, the chances of success were slim from the start. In December, Schwazer was rebuffed when he wanted to have the ban suspended immediately. In a court ruling from March 17th, which has only now been published, it was also confirmed that the ban will definitely remain in place until 2024. A small glimmer of hope remains Based on the current evidence, the Schwazer clan can no longer file an appeal against the ban. It is very questionable at this point that Schwazer will return to the competition stage again. Also because he would be 39 years old when the ban expires. But there remains a small glimmer of hope: If new evidence emerges from the trial in Bolzano - which is still ongoing - Schwazer could go to court again in Switzerland. “The last word has not yet been spoken,” says Gerhard Brandstätter, Schwazer’s lawyer, to the HANDLE combative. “We will return to Lausanne with solid evidence, which for now is only heavy circumstantial evidence. We are therefore waiting for the report, which is to be submitted in Bolzano on June 30th.”
