Ten days left until the Maddalene Sky Marathon

Registrations for the Maddalene Sky Marathon, which is also part of the Sky Runner Series Italy this year, are in full swing ten days before the start. 130 athletes have registered for the mountain run, which will take participants from Our Lady in the Forest to Rumo over a distance of 44,5 kilometers and 2905 meters in altitude.

Some top athletes have already registered for the Maddalene Sky Marathon. Gil Pintarelli, for example, is at the start and, after third place in 2013 and second place at the last edition last year, is aiming for victory this year. A young South Tyrolean would like to challenge him for this, namely the Haflinger Andreas Reiterer (Telmekom Team). The 23-year-old took third place in this year’s Südtirol Ultra Skyrace “short”. Also among the favorites are Mikhail Maamlev (Team Valetudo), who came fifth in 2012, and Stefano Fantuz from Team Scarpa. However, last year's winner Fabio Bazzana (Team Salomon) will not be at the start because he is slowed down by an injury.

In the women's category, local hero Lorenza Bortoluzzi would like to climb to the highest podium of the winner's podium for the second time since 2013. The 35-year-old from Trentino proved that she is in very good shape a month ago at the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace “short”, which she won in a confident manner. This makes Bortoluzzi the top favorite to win the combination classification, which was introduced for the first time this year. The athlete with the fastest overall time in the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace “short” and Maddalene Sky Marathon will receive a non-cash prize. In addition, the team with the strongest representation will also be awarded a prize and seven prizes will be raffled off among all participants who took part in both mountain runs.

But Bortoluzzi faces very strong competition. For example, Maria Chiara Parigi, who took third place at the UltraTrail World Championships and won the Cortina Trail, the Trail degli Eroi and the BVG Marathon in her career. Cecilia Polci (Team Tecnica) and Wiktoria Piejak (Team Valetudo), who took fourth place last year, are also good for a top result. Also there is Edeltraud Thaler, the experienced mountain runner from Lana. Thaler wants to be at the forefront like last year when she came in second.

With the Maddalene Mountain Race, the organizer has come up with something new this year: 25 registrations have been received so far for the shorter route (1500 kilometers/70 meters in altitude), which is celebrating its premiere. By the way, the starting signal for this race doesn't fire until 9 a.m.

“As far as the entries so far are concerned, we are satisfied with the current status of a total of 200 participants from five different nations for both races. Everything is going according to plan and experience shows that many runners will only register in the next few days. One or two top runners, such as record winner Fulvio Dapit, could decide to start at short notice. Alexander Rabensteiner is also thinking about taking part in the Maddalene Sky Marathon, but he has to wait and see how well he recovers from the Swiss Iron Trail,” explain OK boss Sandro Martinelli and his deputy Hubert Ungerer in unison.
