5th place for riders in Madeira

Two weeks ago, the 29-year-old celebrated one of his greatest successes by winning the Ötzi Alpine Marathon. The fact that the reigning Ultra Trail Italian champion is now one of the top favorites in international competitions was already evident when the elite runners of the Madeira Island Ultra Trail - MIUT 115km were put together, where Reiterer was listed in third place.

At exactly midnight, 764 athletes tackled the 115km long trail with 7.000 meters of elevation gain. Immediately after the first few kilometers, a group of five consisting of riders, two Frenchmen, a Swiss and the absolute top favorite, the American Jim Walmsley, broke away from the remaining participants. The decision was made by the legendary climb over 10km and 1.500 meters in altitude on the Pico Ruivo mountain. Walmsley was too strong on the day and secured their first win of the year in a time of 12.58,14:XNUMX hours. Reiterer fought for a place on the podium until the end, but lost some time in the last few kilometers and ultimately finished in a confident fifth place.

The runner from the Asics team said after the race, visibly relieved: “I'm incredibly exhausted but very satisfied. Such a long race, so early in the season with this high level, is not easy but it can continue like this.”

Andreas Reiterer, who was looked after by his new wife Miriam, will stay in Madeira for a few more days. Back in South Tyrol, preparation for the Italian Championships at the Garda Trentino Ultra Trail is on the agenda, which will take place in three weeks.

The women's race in Madeira ended with favorite Courtney Dauwalter's victory (14.40,35).
