Ploner and Tschurtschenthaler triumph in the Erdäpfllauf

The runners had to struggle with strong headwinds right from the start in Brunico on Saturday. This was also the case for defending champion Markus Ploner, who shook off his most stubborn pursuers from the slipstream after around three kilometers and ran a lonely race at the front for the remaining 14 kilometers. The 40-year-old from Vipiteno, who has been living in Rentsch near Bozen for several years, reached the finish in Sand in Taufers in a good time of 58.13 minutes. This meant he was only 20 seconds slower than when he won two years ago – back then in conditions that appeared to be significantly less demanding. “I can handle the route here quite well. Of course I am very happy about my second victory of the day in this South Tyrolean running classic. But with the strong headwind that we had over almost the entire distance, it was very tiring,” said Markus Ploner, who was two with Luis Schenk (St. Christina/1:00.09) and Luca Clara (Klausen/1.00.17). Gardena was relegated to the place of honor. Behind them, Lukas Messner (1:00.50) and Martin Plankensteiner (1:01.46) landed in fourth and fifth positions. Michael Hofer, currently at the top of the Top7 overall ranking, collected valuable points for the ranking in 14th place. The young top athlete from Deutschnofen went into the race in a bad condition. Fifth triumph for Tschurtschenthaler Agnes Tschurtschenthaler showed a strong performance among the women. The 39-year-old from Sexten won the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf with a time of 1:06.07 hours. For Tschurtschenthaler, who also holds the women's course record of 1:02.15 hours, it was the fifth day's victory at the renowned Puster running event. Only Renate Rungger from Sarnen has more success, reaching the highest podium of the winner's podium seven times. “The performance was in line with the training and I am satisfied. I'm not yet in the rhythm of racing so I relied on my feeling. I was able to hide behind the big men for three quarters of the way, but at the end I was fighting the wind alone. But as always, it was a wonderful race that I really enjoyed taking part in,” summed up Agnes Tschurtschenthaler, who may be competing in her home race, the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run, in two weeks. Pircher expands leadership Petra Pircher took second place in the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf. The woman from Lasa, who is currently in the lead in the top 7 overall ranking for women, reached the finish after 1:14.11 hours - 14 seconds ahead of Ingrid Lanthaler, who competes for the Bolzano club SAF Bolzano. By the way, Pircher also won the potato run once, in 2016. The Top7 overall series 2021, however, will continue in a month. The Soltn Mountain Half Marathon on Sunday, September 26th is the penultimate stage of the popular South Tyrolean running series, which will end on October 23rd with the Age Factor Run in Branzoll.
