Reschenseelauf: Khalid Jbari and Giovanna Epis in a class of their own

The 19th edition of the running classic was all about Khalid Jbari. The Bolzano native with Moroccan roots set the pace from the start and continued to distance himself from the competition. At the finish, the 29-year-old had a time of 50:09 minutes, a full 45 seconds ahead of his pursuer Andrea Soffientini and 1:20 minutes ahead of third-place finisher Andrea Eugenio Astolfi.

In the women's race, Giovanna Epis (Carabinieri Bologna) was the first to reach the finish line after 53:42 minutes. The 29-year-old from Venice celebrated a start-to-finish victory, ahead of Nicole Svetlana Reina (+48 seconds) and Mayada Sayyad. The marathon runner from Berlin took part in the World Athletics Championships for Palestine in 2015 and 2017, as well as at the Olympic Games in London in 2016.

The handbikers and athletes from the Special Olympics class were also included in the 19th Reschenseelauf. The organizers are already looking ahead to the Reschenseelauf 2019, the 20th edition brings a big innovation: for the first time, the Reschenseelauf will be held as a night race.

In ideal conditions, around 4000 participants took part in the 15,3km route around Lake Reschen on Saturday afternoon, with the start and finish in front of the historic church tower of Graun.
