Rungger and Lucaci triumph at the Bozen City Trail 2021

Hannes Rungger won the Bozen City Trail for the third time, while Andreea Lucaci won the 27 kilometer route with 1200 meters of altitude for the first time. A total of 173 athletes took part on this bright autumn day.

Before the starting signal at Waltherplatz at 10 a.m., it was clear that the fight for the day's victory would come down to a duel between Hannes Rungger, winner of the 2018 and 2020 editions, and Khalid Jbari, winner in 2019 and course record holder. And that's how it ended up being. Jbari took command, Rungger tried to stay on the heels of the 32-year-old from Athletic Club 96 Alperia. But on the climb towards Ritten, Jbari mistakenly took the wrong turn. And so Rungger, who competes for the sports team, passed his worst opponent - without him noticing at first. Only when the marshals called out did the 39-year-old from Sarner find out that he was now in the front.

Rungger then ran a lonely race at the front and finally reached the finish after 2:09.03 hours. “I really like the route. It has been slightly changed several times, but the principle has always remained the same. We run on the Bolzano promenades with their steep gradients and that is simply beautiful on this trail. The route was very well marked, it is almost impossible to get lost here. I'm in good shape now, so it's a shame that the season is coming to an end. But I would still like to do a half marathon,” said Hannes Rungger, record winner of the event, after reaching the finish line.

Second and third place went to two people from Trentino, namely Enrico Cozzini (2:10.25/GS Fraveggio) and Thomas Guadagnini (2:20.38/US Dolomitica ASD), while Stefan Tschurtschenthaler (ASV Jenesien Soltnflitzer) from Sexten narrowly missed the podium in fourth place. Simon Pertinger from SG Eisacktal achieved the fifth fastest time in 2:23.54 hours. Start-finish victory for Andrea Lucaci from Bolzano For women, Andreea Lucaci was the measure of all things. The 27-year-old from Tuscany, who competes for Atletica Livorno but has been living in Bolzano for some time and works as a nurse in the valley town, celebrated a start-to-finish victory and won the Bozen City Trail in 2:42.40 hours. “I walked alone the whole time. It seemed like the climbs wouldn't stop and it felt like it was more than 1200 meters in altitude. But I really liked it and it was a really great race,” said Lucaci, who finished seventh in the Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run a little over a month ago.

Petra Dibiasi came in second. The athlete from USD Branzoll completed the 27 kilometer route with 1200 meters of altitude in 3:00.53 hours and relegated Barbara Fava (3:19.45) to third place. Clara runs in a league of her own at the Bozen City Run There was also a favorite victory in the Bozen City Run, which is 16 kilometers long and involves climbing 600 meters in altitude. Luca Clara from Klausen, who competes for the ASV Gherdeina Runners, triumphed in 1:04.00, over two minutes ahead of his worst opponent, Georg Premstaller from ASC LF Sarntal Raiffeisen (1:06.13). Clara also set a new course record. The German Swen Arnold achieved the third fastest time in 1:08.22.

The winner of the Bozen City Run, however, is called Barbara Vasselai. The athlete from ASC LF Sarntal prevailed in 1:23.18 and relegated Evelyn Fissneider (1:25.28) and Natalie Mitterrutzner (1:26.01) to the places of honor. For Vasselai it was the second victory at the Bolzano trail event after the one in 2019. Hiller and Moser win Bozen City starters For the first time, the participants also had the choice of a 10 kilometer long and extremely flat route in the Bolzano basin, which led from Waltherplatz to the Talferwiesen and then along the Talfer and later the Eisack to the Palermo Bridge and from there back to the finish. The premiere was won by Arnold Hiller from ASV Afing, who was seven seconds faster in 36.06 minutes than Gerhard Herbst from ASV Deutschnofen. Giuseppe Paone, who competes for ASC Laas, completed the podium (37.04).

Among the women, Karolina Rosa Thaler from ASC LF Sarntal Raiffeisen was the first to cross the finish line. But the victory went to her teammate Maria Moser, who started in the second group and was just over a minute faster than Thaler with a time of 42.01. Sonja Tscholl from ASV LC Bozen Raiffeisen was happy about third place in 43.28. Positive balance from the organizers There were happy faces on Sunday not only among the participants in the three race distances, but also among those athletes who completed the non-competitive 5-kilometer run. The organizing committee also drew a positive conclusion.

“We are very happy with how things went. The new 10 kilometer route has proven itself and is well received. It still needs to get going a bit, but we see a lot of potential here. Of course we would be happy if we could further increase the number of participants. And we hope that we can slowly put the Covid pandemic behind us and that everything will then become easier again. The participants adhered to all the requirements in an exemplary manner. A big compliment to them and a big thank you to our team with the many volunteers who did a very good job,” concluded Sonja Abrate from the Ökoinstitut Südtirol, Dorothea Kelderer from SC Neugries and Andreas Daum from the Bozen Tourist Office.
