IAAF: Russian track and field athletes remain banned

Doha (SID) Russia's track and field athletes remain suspended. As the world association IAAF announced on Monday after its council meeting in Doha/Qatar, the Russian association RUSAF, which was excluded due to the doping scandal, will not be reinstated for the time being. The RUSAF has been excluded from the IAAF since November 2015, and the ban has since been extended nine times. Russian track and field athletes are currently only allowed to take part in international competitions after testing by the IAAF and as so-called “neutral athletes”. At the last meeting in December, the IAAF insisted on two demands. "These two matters are still pending, they still need to be resolved," said Norwegian Rune Andersen, head of the IAAF's doping task force. Russia must give the independent integrity commission AIU access to the doping tests of Russian athletes from 2011 to 2015. The data from the Moscow anti-doping laboratory has now been secured by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and is currently being evaluated. The IAAF is now awaiting the results of this evaluation. In addition, the Russian association must bear the costs of the investigation that the IAAF has to bear because of the scandal, such as the installation of the task force around Andersen. The costs are said to be around three million dollars. According to the IAAF, Russia has not yet made the payment. Another fundamental requirement of the IAAF had already been met last September. At that time, WADA reinstated the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA amid much protest. For Russia, participation in the World Cup in Doha at the end of September will be a race against time. However, IAAF President Sebastian Coe “did not want to speculate” about a possible start of Russian athletes under the Russian flag in Doha. “This will depend on the task force’s proposals,” he said in a conference call Monday evening. It was only at the beginning of February that the International Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) banned twelve Russian track and field athletes, some of whom were highly decorated. Among them were London Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov (high jump), former high jump world champion and London third-placed Svetlana Shkolina, former indoor world champion Lyukman Adams (triple jump) and two-time relay world champion Tatjana Firowa (4x400). The suspensions are based on the report by special investigator Richard McLaren. The Canadian uncovered institutional doping in Russia in his investigation commissioned by WADA.
