Sensational: South Tyroleans win three gold medals in Grosseto

The first South Tyrolean gold medal was won this afternoon by U23 athlete Nicolò Fusaro. The 21-year-old pole vaulter from Bolzano won his flagship discipline with an incredible 5.25 m. Fusaro not only improved his personal best by an impressive nine centimeters, he also broke the standard for the U23 European Championships in Tallinn. Fusaro, who competes for Athletic Club 96 Bozen, crossed 5.25 m on his first attempt. Andrea Marin (5.00) and Lorenzo Modugno (4.90) completed the podium. A little later, U20 ace Katja Pattis took center stage. The animal rider from the South Tyrol Team Club was the top favorite over the 3000 m obstacle, and today she more than lived up to her role as favorite. Pattis stopped the time measurement at an extremely strong 10:37.81 minutes (new best time) and was almost 20 seconds ahead of Eliosa Marsengo (10:58.62) from Vicenza at the finish. Francesca Mentasti came third in 11:12.23 minutes. U23 talent Sara Buglisi, also from Athletic Club 96 Bozen, then completed the hat trick. The Merano walker was once again in a class of her own on the 10 km long route and secured the “Scudetto” in 48:37.27 minutes, ahead of Trentino’s Vittoria Giordani (50:48.26) and Anastasia Giulioni (52:31.18). So this was a South Tyrolean reality. But that wasn't enough, because with Alberto Maseras and Anna Menz in third place, two more South Tyrolean medals were added. The Bolzano high jumper from SV Lana jumped 2.06 m, which in the end was enough for bronze behind Italian champion Manuel Lando (2.09 m) and Francesco Ruzza (also 2.06 m). In the evening, long jumper Anna Menz from Atletica Firenze also secured bronze. The Marlingen woman increased her record to 6.02 m and in the end only had to admit defeat to Veronica Crida (6.22) and Marta Giovannini (6.09). U20 ace Samuel Demetz won South Tyrol's first medal late on Friday evening. The 18-year-old 3000 m runner from Val Gardena from the Meran Sports Club set a new personal best time of 8:29.03 minutes, placing him in second place behind Riccardo Spanu (8:26.70) from Sardinia. Bronze went to Moad Razgani in 8:29.96 minutes. Linda Palumbo (U23) from Trentino, who competes for the South Tyrol Team Club, also came second in the 3000 m obstacle in 10:19.54 minutes. An amazing day, there could even be more medals tomorrow Sunday. Lanan pole vault ace Nathalie Kofler (U23) in particular has a good chance of a top placement.
