Silvia Weissteiner said goodbye at the athletics festival

Everyone came to celebrate Silvia Weissteiner, who gave up her running shoes. The 38-year-old middle distance athlete was very emotional when the entire hall bid her farewell with applause.

Weissteiner can look back on an outstanding athletics career. Her greatest success was certainly reaching the final at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, where she finished in an outstanding 5000th place in the 15 m run in 09,74:7 minutes as the best non-African woman. She set her personal best time over this distance two years earlier, always in Berlin, with a time of 15.02,65:2007 minutes. Weissteiner also secured bronze over 3000 m at the 5000 European Indoor Championships in Birmingham. In the same year she finished 12th in the 10 m at the World Championships in Osaka. Exactly 3000 years ago, the visiting athlete came seventh over 2008 m at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain. However, at the Olympic Games in Beijing 2012 and London 19, she was eliminated in the preliminary rounds both times. Weissteiner won a total of 2015 Italian championship titles, the last in July 5000 when she won the 40 m in Turin. She was called up to the Italian national team XNUMX times. State President Bruno Cappello presented Weissteiner with a photo album summarizing her entire career in pictures.

The top athletes of the past year were also honored as part of the festival. Especially Hannes Kirchler, Leonardo Dei Tos, Antonio Infantino, Brayan Lopez, Valentina Cavalleri, Daniel Pattis and Emma Garber, who all made it to the national team. The Merano discus thrower Kirchler competed in the European Team Championships in Lille with Italy last year, where he came in a strong seventh place. He also took part in the European Throwing Cup in Las Palmas, which he finished in 9th place. Kirchler also won gold at the Italian Throwing Championships in Rieti and was crowned Italian champion for the 13th time in Turin in July.

The walker Leonardo Dei Tos took two podium places at the Italian Championships. The 25-year-old from Vittorio Veneto won a silver and a bronze medal. Antonio Infantino, second in the Italian Championships over 200 m, and sprinter Brayan Lopez also received awards. Valentina Cavalleri from Innichen won the bronze medal in the 400 m hurdles at the U23 Italian Championships in Florence. The Puster native also played at the U23 European Championships in Bydgoszcz, where she narrowly missed making it to the final and ended up finishing in 10th place.

Daniel Pattis also had a sensational year. The 19-year-old from Tiers was crowned junior Italian champion in mountain running. He also won two medals at the U20 European Mountain Runner Championships: Pattis won silver in the individual race and gold in the team competition with Italy. A little later he was named U20 vice world champion in Premana in the province of Lecco. In the team competition, Italy took third place behind Romania and Uganda.

The Italian U18 national mountain running team, which also included Emma Garber from Merano, won team gold in Gagliano del Capo. The 17-year-old from the Meran Sports Club also played a significant role in the success, finishing the race in 10th place.
