Silvia Weissteiner wins Vipiteno city run

The Vipiteno city run is one of the most traditional races in South Tyrol, but the run has not been held in the last ten years. This year the Wipptalers celebrated their comeback. All eyes were on Silvia Weissteiner: she was a member of ASV Vipiteno for 17 years. The guest, who celebrated her 39th birthday just over two weeks ago, began her career at the traditional Wipptal club. The best South Tyrolean long-distance athlete then moved to the forest guard sports group, where she celebrated success at national and international level for eleven years. Weissteiner resigned last year and is now working for the Carabinieri in Verona.

Although she doesn't train much anymore, it was enough for the 19-time Italian champion to win. Weissteiner completed the three-kilometer route in 10.54 minutes and relegated Romana Gafriller from Barbia (11.13) and Petra Pircher from Laas (11.20) to second and third place.

As expected, Markus Ploner from Mittewald was clearly number one among the men. South Tyrol's strongest marathon runner, who now lives in Bolzano, left no doubt about his victory on the 5,2 kilometer long men's course and stopped the clock after 14.07 minutes. At the finish he was 29 seconds ahead of his teammate from ASV Sterzing, the former professional triathlete Daniel Hofer from Bolzano. Completing the podium was Georg Premstaller from Sarner, who was already 56 seconds behind.

320 runners took part in the VSS city run in the historic center of Vipiteno at the weekend. In the end, the hosts Silvia Weissteiner and Markus Ploner stood at the top of the podium.
