Soltn mountain half marathon: Rungger is number one

Hannes Rungger had to admit defeat on the flat stretches a few times this year, but no South Tyrolean was faster uphill this year than the 29-year-old from Sarner. As expected, Rungger and Frick ran together at the top for a good half of the 21.1 km long race (520 meters in altitude). But between km 11 and 12 Rungger pulled away on a slightly sloping section. By the time he reached the finish, he was 1:31 minutes ahead of Frick. Rungger was clearly faster than Frick last year.

“I was already hoping that I could win here. I divided the race well today and attacked at the right moment,” said the happy winner. "At the end of a long season I'm a bit tired now." The last big goal of the season for Sarner is the Frankfurt Marathon at the end of October. For Rungger it was the second victory on the Salten after 2008 and the second top 7 success in a row. Nevertheless, he is out of the question for the Top7 overall victory. Rudi Brunner from Merano has come a lot closer to this thanks to his current third place. The final decision will be made on October 23rd at the Three Municipalities Half Marathon in Branzoll.

Edeltraud Thaler lived up to her role as favorite among the women. The 45-year-old from Lana controlled the race from the start. After 1:34:09 she safely reached the finish line first. Behind, the runners were closer together. Mirella Bergamo from Trentino followed in second place, almost a minute and a half behind, ahead of the surprising Andrea Schweigkofler from SC Meran and Petra Pircher from Laas. In the overall standings, Thaler extended her lead over Pircher. At the award ceremony that followed, Thaler and Rungger were all smiles. Both received a winner's check of 500 euros.

For the first time, two-person relay teams took part in the Soltn Mountain Half Marathon. The victory here went to two runners from the organizing ASV Jenesien Soltnflitzer. Albert Rungger and Barbara Egger needed a total of 1:32:56 and were therefore a good minute faster than the women's winner. OC boss Sepp Rungaldier drew a positive conclusion: "We were hoping for a new participant record by being included in the Top7 running series and we set that." In ideal conditions, 260 runners started on the well-prepared route over the Saltenwiesen, around 80 more than last year.
