Sport and study: This is how Nathalie Kofler manages to do both

3,90 in 2020 – 4,21 meters this year. Nathalie Kofler has gained 31 centimeters in one season. That's quite a lot in pole vaulting. The 20-year-old from Lana benefits from the many jumps she was able to complete in the Innsbruck hall in the winter. After graduating from high school, Kofler began studying in the Tyrolean capital. Since the excellent athlete doesn't like the simple things that much, she decided to study sports and nutrition to become a teacher and, as a second degree, classical sports science. As an enthusiastic amateur cook, she can already incorporate her knowledge into the dishes she prepares herself.

“Proper nutrition is important for everyone. But especially for competitive athletes. “The diet gives you energy and has an impact on performance and recovery,” says the cheerful person from the Burggrafenamt. The intensive training in Innsbruck under Thomas Neuhauser (who regularly coordinates with Hubert Indra, Kofler's trainer in Lana) bore fruit this year. “Nati” jumped four meters several times – in Lana she increased her record to 4,21. The Italian championship title and participation in the U23 European Championship were further highlights of 2021.

“I am very satisfied with this season. I made a big leap. I used harder bars and competed in many competitions. I’m starting to notice the tiredness, because sometimes a vacation wasn’t worth it,” reports Kofler. Today the last (or penultimate) competition of the season takes place at the Arge Alp meeting in Locarno in Ticino. “Then maybe I’ll relax on Lake Garda for a few days,” says Nathalie Kofler. The goal is the Olympics There isn't much time to rest or even do nothing. “There are exams at the university in October. I'm currently learning a lot. Then it’s time to plan the coming season. As long as I'm having fun, I want to dedicate myself intensively to sports and studies," Kofler already has clear ideas. At 20, she is only at the beginning of a great career that would culminate in the Olympic Games. “Yes, this is a dream. Petra Nardelli’s participation in the Summer Games in Tokyo is a great inspiration for me in this regard,” confirms the pole vaulter.

She has chosen a technically very difficult discipline. Kofler: “It takes a lot of training sessions to coordinate all the processes precisely. I would like to extend my approach to 16 steps, I'm currently doing 14. A longer bar is also planned for 2022. I know that there is a lot of room for improvement because I am still making too many mistakes. But that’s the incentive and that’s what you train for.” She can switch off with friends or on vacation. Kofler is supported by his family, the South Tyrolean Sports Aid and the “Lana Region”.
