South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run: “We are becoming more and more international”

The Dreizinnenlauf is taking place for the 19th time this year, but it is still full of surprises. Mr. Hofer, what's new this time?

Gottfried Hofer: This year we are offering a mountain running camp for the first time. In the week before the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run, participants have the opportunity to get the finishing touches for the race under the guidance of six experienced top athletes. The program not only includes five training runs of different lengths and altitude differences, but also a lecture by sports medicine specialist Dr. Alex Mitterhofer on the topic of “mountain running”, a session in the fitness studio with specific exercises for runners, several partial body massages and workshops on training planning and running technique. And of course the route of the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run is also carefully inspected so that the athletes can analyze and memorize the most difficult sections in advance.

It is noticeable that participants are deciding to start the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run earlier and earlier...

Yes, this is a very encouraging development. As of today we have 913 starters, so there are not even 100 free places left. So in fact we are almost sold out. If you still want to be there on September 17th, you should definitely register in the next few days. We have 19 different nations, almost 300 starters come from Germany, almost 250 from Austria, that's more than half of all participants. But mountain runners from Sweden, Norway, Great Britain and South Africa also don't want to miss out on the Drei Zinnen Run experience - it's nice that the name Südtirol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run is also known beyond our national borders. We are becoming more and more international.

To what do you attribute the great interest in the South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run?

We are lucky that our race takes place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of the Dolomites. Participants can enjoy an incredible panorama along the entire route in our nature park. The run is not too technically difficult and not too extreme; it is not just a grind. Nevertheless, you have to be physically fit to cover the 17,5 kilometers with an altitude of 1350 meters. Our race is also very well organized. The participants recognize this and good word of mouth is still the best advertising!

It still takes four and a half weeks until the start on Saturday, September 17th. What is the current status of preparations?

We work all year round to create the perfect event possible. Now, around a month before our mountain run, we are finalizing the rough planning and going into more and more detail. In the last few days before the starting signal, we will have to correct some minor deficiencies and we will have a few surprises again. All in all, we are still on target this year. The seven-member organizing committee with around 250 volunteers from almost all clubs in the area has already done an excellent job with regard to one of the largest events in Sesto.

The South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run not only attracts a lot of recreational athletes - there are always some top athletes taking part. Can you tell us a few names about who will be there this year?

Last year's winner Andrzej Dlugosz has already registered. Otherwise, the top athletes always wait until the last minute. This year the World Mountain Running Championships will take place in the week before the Dreizinnenlauf. That's why the mountain runners are now focusing on this.
