South Tyrolean athletics festival heralds the start of the new season

Numerous guests of honor accepted the athletics association's invitation, including the South Tyrolean Coni boss Heinz Gutweniger, VSS President Günther Andergassen, USSA President Carlo Bosin, Sporthilfe managing director Stefan Leitner, the mayor of Bolzano Gigi Spagnolli and the state parliament member Magdalena Amhof. The host was the deputy director of the Raiffeisen Association Christian Tanner, and the sponsors Hansjörg Riegler (chairman Raiffeisenkasse Bozen), Bruno Doni and Bruno Abram (Ladurner Umwelt) and Roberto Franz (Mondo) were also present.

Membership increases to 3500 athletes

Bruno Cappello looked back on a successful 2013. The number of members in the association increased by 400 athletes to almost 3500. Seven South Tyrolean athletes made it into the national team and 35 reached the final at the Italian Championships. Cappello was pleased that he had managed to launch some new, important initiatives on the road to the Olympic Games in Rio in two years.

Paolo Dal Molin, Silvia Weissteiner, Renate Rungger, Anna Stefani and Julia Calliari were recognized as last year's top athletes for their outstanding achievements. Dal Molin, mother from Belluno, father from Cameroon, competed for the Bolzano club Athletic Club 96 last year and won silver in the 60 m hurdles at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg. 34-year-old Silvia Weissteiner from Gasteig also won silver over 3000m at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin, Turkey, while Renate Rungger from Sarnen narrowly missed out on a medal in fourth place at the European Mountain Running Championships in Borovets, Bulgaria, but became European champions with the team. The young Sterzinger Anna Stefani took 20th place over 5m at the U3000 European Championships in Rieti and Julia Calliari from Siebeneich made it to the semi-finals of the 18m run at the U100 World Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Eight medals at the Italian Track Championships

South Tyrol's athletes also brought home eight medals from the Italian Track Championships. Silvia Weissteiner won the indoor title in the 3000 m, the 800 m runner Lukas Rifesser and discus thrower Hannes Kirchler won silver at the “Assoluti” in Milan. Anna Stefani also won gold in the U20 class over 5000 m, Andreas Zagler from Kaltern in the U18 class in the javelin throw and Alessandra Realdon from Bolzano in the U16 class over 80 m hurdles. There are also the two silver medals from Petra Nardelli (U18/400 m) and Stefanie Gruber (U16/ball). Annalena Hofer from Meran also became the U18 Italian champion in mountain running.

Kathrin Hanspeter from Sarnen and Hermann Achmüller from Pusteria were honored as “Athletes of the Year” among the road runners. In the mountain runners, the award went to Edeltraud Thaler from Lana and Hannes Rungger from Sarnen and in the masters to Waltraud Egger and Hubert Indra.

Youth Grand Prix Ladurner to brothers Baù, Sophie Mayr and JuliaMair

The Youth Grand Prix Ladurner was won by Sophie Mayr and Alex Baù in the U16 category and Julia Mair and Patrick Baù in the U14 age group. There was also an award for the South Tyrol Ladies team, which came second in the Masters Team Italian Championship, and the Athletic Club 96 Bozen, which won the “Finale Argento” and qualified for the “Finale Oro” of the twelve best clubs in Italy .

Hans Ladurner from Meran - he celebrated his 81st birthday on Friday - and Hans Pircher from the Bozen Running Club were also honored for their very successful careers as trainers.
