Participation limit reached: 300 starters in the Meran-Algund Half Marathon

After a year in which there were almost no running events due to the corona pandemic, the desire to exercise outdoors and compare ourselves with other athletes is of course huge. Martin Sanin, the OC chief of the Half Marathon Meran-Algund, could probably have offered thousands of starting places to women and men if the necessary conditions had been met. But the Covid pandemic is not completely over (yet) and therefore the safety of participants and volunteers comes first. 300 starters are therefore allowed to take part in the half marathon distance or the fitness run, which is just over half as long, on Sunday, May 2nd. For those lucky enough to get one of the coveted starting places, a beautiful and, above all, flat route with an altitude of only around 50 meters awaits, on which a formidable best time of 1:00.55 hours set by Paul Kanda (Kenya) from 2002 has to be beaten . The route leads from the start at the Kurhaus and along Freiheitsstrasse to Europa-Allee, then to the train station and the city theater, later around the Andreas Hofer monument and from there out of town towards Gratsch. From here the route runs back towards the city center, with participants also walking through the Vinschger Tor. From the center we head back along Freedom Street towards Lagundo, past blooming apple orchards. When you arrive in Algund, you make a U-turn and the route leads back towards Meran, passing the historic Vinschger Tor again. While the participants in the Fitness Run can soon look forward to crossing the finish line, the “half marathoners” have to go on a second lap before they also pass the finish arch at the Kurhaus. Three former winners are at the start “We have pulled out all the stops in the last few weeks and months to ensure that our traditional event can take place. The security measures will be extensive, which means considerable additional effort for us, but for us it is simply about sending a positive sign of change. We are happy and grateful that the running season is celebrating its start in Meran. Of course we would have liked more participants, but we also realize that in this phase of the pandemic - with relatively good numbers in terms of new infections - we shouldn't take any risks," says Meran's OC boss Martin Sanin. By the way, the organizers have set up a waiting list from which a potential participant will be replaced in the event of a cancellation. There are some very strong athletes among the participants in the Meran-Algund Half Marathon. Markus Ploner (2018), Massimo Leonardi (2016) and Hannes Rungger (2012 to 2014) are also three former winners of the traditional Meran event at the start. This trio faces competition from Michael Hofer, Andreas Reiterer, Daniel Pattis, Nicolò Zorzi and Peter Lanziner. There is no former winner among the women, but the Swiss Nicole Dürst was the runner-up in the last edition in May 2019. The Swiss can also look forward to strong competitors such as Petra Pircher, Claudia Andrighettoni, Anna Santini, Arianna Lutteri or Birgit Bracket.
