Thomas Oberhofer is master world champion in the 100m hurdles

Over 21 athletes from 35 different countries took part in the 8000st edition of the Over 98 World Championships. Italy reported a total of 431 participants, 13 of whom were South Tyroleans and they were really successful. The 51-year-old specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery Thomas Oberhofer (South Tyrol Team) was crowned world champion in the 100m hurdles in the M50 category on Saturday. After a cautious start, he took the lead after 50 m and won clearly with the new Italian record of 14.15 seconds, ahead of the American David Ashford (14.31) and the Frenchman Jean Luc Duez (14.33).

Waltraud Egger and Ingeborg Zorzi take silver The W65 middle-distance runner Waltraud Egger (Sportclub Meran) only had to admit defeat to the British Angela Copson over 5000 m. Egger stopped the time at 22:07,54 minutes, Copson at 21:51,98 minutes. Bronze went to France’s Annik Kroes (22:12,83). However, the Meran native narrowly missed out on a medal in the 1500 m. With the new Italian record time of 5:54.96 minutes she took 4th place. Egger's teammate Ingeborg Zorzi also won a silver medal. The Merano woman came second in the heptathlon with 4936 points behind the new world champion Wilma Perkins from Australia (5415 points). The Finnish Terhi Kokkonen took third place with 4911 points. Zorzi came fourth in the high jump and the 80m hurdles.

Relay bronze for Christine Teissl and Rudolf Frei Medals four and five go to Christine Teissl from Wipptal and Rudolf Frei from Merano. Teissl took bronze in the W45 cross team competition with Francesca Pini Prato and Francesca Ragnetti. In the individual run, however, she came 5th. Frei also won bronze with the Italian 4x400m relay. With Franco Gasparinetti, Dario Rappo and Renato Goretti, he came third behind Australia and France in 4:27.46 minutes. Frei took 400th place in the 5m individual run. Paul Zipperle, Pierluigi Putzu and Konrad Geiser also achieved further top 10 placements.
