Tokyo gives the green light: clearing the way for relocation of the marathon

The host city of the 2020 Summer Games will "not hinder" the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) plans, said Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Friday. However, she emphasized that she was still not happy with the decision.

"We cannot agree with the IOC, but we will not hinder the decision of the IOC, which has the final authority of the decision," Koike said at a meeting between representatives of politics, the organizing committee and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Tokyo : "In other words, this is a decision without consent."

The IOC, which wants to use the move to protect runners and walkers from the hot and humid climate of the Japanese capital, once again emphasized the necessity of the decision on Friday. “I think it is now clear that we have acceptance of our proposal,” said John Coates, chairman of the responsible IOC commission, following Koike’s remarks. Tokyo will not have any costs for the move.

Due to the disturbing images at the World Athletics Championships in Doha and the impending heat in Tokyo, the IOC, in collaboration with the world association IAAF, suggested moving the competitions to Sapporo, 800 km north. Coates declared the decision final on Wednesday, as he did last week.
