U20 Italian Championship: Stefanie Messner takes bronze in the javelin throw

The woman from Val Gardena will be turning 19 in exactly a week. But today she gave herself the best birthday present in Rieti. In the penultimate throw, Messner reached 44,89m and was only 10 cm below her personal best from the previous year. In the last attempt she even increased it to 47,78 m. That's a new national record. Messner improved Lana's Christiane Holzner's old record from 2009 (45,94 m) by an incredible 1,84 m. The athlete from SSV Brixen (she is coached by Marco Andreatta) only had to admit defeat to the two top favorites, Luisa Sinigaglia from Trentino (49.51 m) and Ilaria Casarotto from Vicenza (48.51). Fourth-placed Greta Romei was already over five meters behind the woman from Val Gardena.

Andreas Zagler “only” 11. However, the Kalterer javelin thrower Andreas Zagler did not make it onto the podium. Yesterday he took second place in the qualification with a very good 60,54 m, but today in the final he had a pitch-black day and had to settle for 53,93th place with “only” 11 m. The 400 m runner Petra Nardelli from Bolzano, however, reached 5th place. In 56,00 seconds she improved her previous best performance by 36 hundredths. But bronze (Virginia Troiani, 55,02) was almost a second away. The title went to Ayomide Folorunso in an excellent 53,46 seconds. She missed Alexia Oberstolz's U20 Italian record from 1999 (53,32) by just 14 hundredths. Roberta Albertoni from Bolzano, who competes for Valsugana, came 7th in the 100m hurdles, while high jumper Franziska Kofler from Lana took 1,65th place with 9 m.

On Sunday the 400m hurdles with Cavalleri and Agreiter The Italian Championships end tomorrow in Rieti. From a South Tyrolean perspective, the 400m hurdles are particularly interesting. In the U20, Valentina Cavalleri from Puster ran the fourth time in the preliminary run in 1:00,96 minutes, while her teammate at SSV Bruneck, Caren Agreiter, even set the third best time in the U23 in 1:00,65.
