US athletes face sanctions after Trump protest at award ceremony

The governing body of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) wants to examine possible consequences for violating the conditions of participation for athletes, which include a waiver of demonstrations of a political nature.

Hammer thrower Gwen Berry imitated US sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos's iconic protest against injustice at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico. At the sound of the American national anthem, she raised her right fist and bowed her head. As at the 2017 World Cup, Race Imboden followed NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with a knee protest at the medal ceremony for the US team gold in foil fencing.

“I have decided to sacrifice my moment at the front of the podium today to bring attention to issues that I believe need to be addressed,” Imboden tweeted. He is particularly critical of “racism, gun control, mistreatment of immigrants and a president who spreads hate.”

At the beginning of the games, athletics legend Carl Lewis spoke out for more justice in sport. “We have a racist president and a misogynistic president who values no one but himself,” Lewis said when asked about gender equality in sports.
