Lots of new things at the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace

The Ultra Skyrace is South Tyrol's longest and most extreme trail run. Held for the first time in 2013, the 121 kilometer long route with an altitude difference of over 7500 meters has in recent years always started from Bolzano and, in the shape of a horseshoe, over the Rittner Horn, the Sarner Scharte, the Latzfonser Kreuz, the Fahnerscharte and the Penser Joch continues to the Sarner Weißhorn, over the Hirzer, on to the Stoanernen Mandln, the Möltner Kaser and Jenesien back to Bozen. The 9th edition of the extreme sports event, which will take place from August 26th to 28th, 2022, is different in this respect. For the first time, the destination will not be in the Talferstadt, but 16 kilometers north in Sarnthein. “The participants run the last few kilometers from the Auener Joch towards Möltner Kaser, then on to the Stoanernen Mandln and over the Putzer Kreuz down to Sarnthein, where they cross the finish line at the Haberle Anger church festival site. The route length will not change significantly and will remain roughly the same at 116 kilometers and 7276 meters in altitude,” explains Josef Günther Mair, head of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace’s OC. The South Tyrol Skyrace ends at Penser Joch The finishers of the South Tyrol Sky Marathon (27 km/42,2 hm) and the South Tyrol Sky Trail (2585 km/27 hm) are also expected in the main town of the Sarntal on Saturday, August 1800th. In the last edition, the shortest distance of the extreme sports event was held in the opposite direction. A change that the endurance athletes highly praised and which was therefore retained. The South Tyrol Skyrace, however, has been given a completely new route. The participants who tackle the second longest distance start at the same time as the ultra runners and end their competition after 63 kilometers and 4143 meters in altitude at Penser Joch, where the finish of the South Tyrol Skyrace will now be located. A restart for the entire extreme sports event “For our organizing committee, the 2022 edition is a restart in the truest sense. We would like to continue all the good things about our event and improve those points that were perhaps not yet optimal. The start of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace on Waltherplatz in Bolzano is an absolute highlight for the participants and will be maintained. However, for safety reasons we will bring it forward to 17 p.m. this year,” says Mair. The atmosphere in Sarnthein is always excellent, which is why the organizers have decided to set up the finish for almost all distances here. “When redesigning the 63 km distance, the idea that we wanted to accommodate the ultra participants who gave up at Penser Joch played an important role. Since there is now a distance finish there, we can evaluate the completion of half the distance and the endurance athletes receive the points for the ITRA rating,” the organizers added. Enrollments have been open since December 1st Registrations for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace and the three other distances have been possible since December 1st on the event's official website www.suedtirol-ultraskyrace.it.
