Yesterday they also won the Italian 5000m and discus championships in Turin, but it wasn't enough to be nominated for Beijing. Both missed the World Cup standard. Weissteiner should have run the 5000 m in 15:20.00 minutes, two months ago in Gavardo she clocked 15:36.66 minutes, which meant she was 16 seconds short. This is the 114th time worldwide this year; the fastest so far this season was Almaz Ayana from Ethiopia in 14:14.32 minutes. The Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler is in 62.56rd place in the 53 world best list with 2015 m. Jason Morgan from Jamaica is number 68.19 with 1 m. To get a World Cup ticket, Kirchler would have had to throw the discus 65.00 m.

Only ten South Tyroleans at a World Cup So far only ten South Tyroleans have taken part in a World Cup. The World Athletics Championships have only existed since 1983. Until 1991 they were held every four years, but since then they have taken place every two years. The first South Tyrolean to take part was Erica Rossi from Bolzano in 1983, the last one was Alex Schwazer four years ago in Daegu. He also celebrated his greatest successes when he won bronze twice in the 2005 km walking event in 2007 and 50. In Osaka 2007 and Berlin 2009, four South Tyroleans took part in a World Cup, but this year unfortunately no local athlete made it into the Italian World Cup squad. But with Simona La Mantia there is still an Italian with South Tyrolean roots in the squad. The triple jumper from Sicily is the daughter of the former track and field athlete Monika Mutschlechner from Brunico.
