When Dahlmeier & Co. fight against oblivion

The AlpFrontTrail is not just a sporting event. This run brings the border with the associated war relics into public awareness and reminds us of past events. The historical facts are prepared by renowned researchers from Eurac. Through sport, the border as a dividing element is transformed into a unifying experience and the value of freedom is upheld. “Anyone can run, regardless of nationality, skin color or religion. You don't need expensive equipment to run; you can do it anywhere. That’s precisely why this sport is ideal for expressing what connects us,” says Philipp Reiter. The 29-year-old trail runner and videographer from Bad Reichenhall (Bavaria) came up with the idea for the AlpFrontTrail together with the South Tyrolean photographer Harald Wisthaler, which will begin on Tuesday, October 6th with the first stage from Grado to the Castelmonte monastery. “We have some of the best trail runners in the world competing” Harald Wisthaler The route in the majestic mountains leads through the Canal Valley and Tarvisio to Sesto, from there via Arabba and Grims/Grigno to Riva del Garda, before tackling the final part over the Passo Tonale and the Ortles to the Stelvio Pass. “We have some of the best trail runners in the world at the start with Anton Palzer, Daniel Jung, Eva Sperger, Jakob Hermann, Martina Valmassoi, Hannes Perkmann, Marco De Gasperi, Ina Forchthammer and Tom Wagner. In addition, the biathlon Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier will also be at the start. There is great enthusiasm among the athletes, they can hardly wait for the adventure to begin,” explains Wisthaler. Kick-off event at the Helmhaus arouses anticipation An enthusiasm that could already be felt recently at the kick-off event at the Helmhaus, directly on the Italian-Austrian border. “I am very interested in the period surrounding the First World War because we have a family connection to this era. After all, our ancestors experienced this conflict first hand. I’m looking forward to finding out more about it,” said Daniel Jung, 1-year-old trail professional from Vinschgau in South Tyrol.

Martina Valmassoi from Pieve di Cadore sees it similarly. “We learned a lot about this time at school, but we have already forgotten most of it. “I’m looking forward to finding out more about the First World War and the locations in my homeland – and to a great week with interesting people who share my enthusiasm for the mountains,” said the 1-year-old. The meeting with other top athletes is also the decisive reason for Eva Sperger from Munich to face the hardships. “I love the Dolomites and the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage, which is why I took part in numerous races there. “That was one of the reasons why the AlpFrontTrail project immediately captivated me,” revealed the 33-year-old.

With Suunto and the 3 Zinnen Dolomites holiday region, the organizers have two strong partners at their side. The Tyrolean Caroline Gredler and route manager Freddy Mair (Niederdorf) are involved in the organization. Photo exhibition in spring 2021 The AlpFrontTrail is accompanied by the photographer Wisthaler and a video team and the events are extensively documented on social media. There will also be two events for the public: on Thursday, October 8th in Sexten and on Monday, October 12th in Riva del Garda. The project, which is under the patronage of the European Region Tyrol South Tyrol Trentino and chaired by South Tyrol Governor Arno Kompatscher, will be completed in spring 2021. The most beautiful images of the AlpFrontTrail will be presented as part of a photo exhibition in public spaces in San Candido, Riva del Garda, as well as the three capitals of the European region of Bolzano, Trento and Innsbruck.
