Born to run: Andreas Reiterer and a funny bet

Reiterer attended the sports high school in Mals and was a ski racer. “But after two cruciate ligament tears, I ended my active skiing career at the age of 18. “I was always rather thin and more suited to endurance sports,” reports the chef, who lives in the Viertlerhof in Hafling. Andreas is primarily responsible for the desserts.

After his ski career, Reiterer tried mountain biking and racing cycling. He then made a funny bet with a friend. “We took part in the Dolomiti Superbike in Niederdorf. Whoever of us finished later had to have a pink pig tattooed on their butt. “Luckily, I narrowly prevailed,” jokes Reiterer. The friend's name is not revealed. Reiterer is part of the national trail team In 2014, Reiterer took part in a mountain run more for fun and came third straight away. “From the following year onwards, I trained regularly and decided to do long-distance running,” said the 28-year-old. Reiterer is now the only South Tyrolean member of the Italian national trail team. As in 2020, he recently won the Italian championship in long-distance trail running (70 km). This even secured him a ticket to the World Championships in November in Chang Mai (Thailand).

Reiterer is now known throughout Europe and also outside the continent. His girlfriend Miriam and father Florian (“nothing works without him, he's always there”) are his biggest fans and support him in preparation and the competitions. “We train on days off or during room hours. “I actually do something every day,” says the endurance specialist. The 120 km Ultratrail (with 5800 meters altitude) from Lavaredo on June 25th starts at 23 p.m. on Friday evening and you have 13 hours to reach the finish. Strong French are there, but Reiterer wants to have a say in the victory. With such great pressures, a crisis can hardly be avoided. "This is true. It usually lasts a few minutes. I overcome it because I just tell myself that it's part of it and that it'll be fine again in a few minutes. That’s how it is,” says Reiterer.

All races this year - such as an ultratrail on Mont Blanc in August and even "smaller" competitions - are geared towards the World Championships in Thailand. "That's right. The World Cup has priority and I’m looking forward to it. “It’s lucky that the Italian association covers all the expenses,” says Reiterer. He was drawn to the challenge of long-distance running. His family supports him, even though his mother is always a little worried.
