In the sweltering heat - 34 degrees in the shade and over 60 degrees in the racing car - the race in the Carnic Alps was extremely difficult and stressful for man and machine. Nevertheless, the 37-year-old managed to stay at the front and also kept local drivers, some of whom competed with more powerful cars, at bay. The Eggentaler even fought for the podium in the overall ranking. After 340 kilometers of racing, he was 2,8 seconds short of third place in the overall standings. He won his class and category by over three minutes over the runner-up.

“I didn't expect such a result because our car was clearly inferior to the competition with turbo engines on this track. We have not only made great progress in terms of driving - from race to race we notice that we are getting better and better at the entire vehicle settings, telemetry and setup. In the meantime we’re pretty much pushing the car to its limits.”

Every beginning is difficult

Bernd Zanon works independently in the industrial sector, while his long-time co-pilot Florian Zelger is Secretary General of the South Tyrolean state parliament. Zelger can no longer travel regularly due to his job. The Eggentaler drove his first races with a Peugeot 106, which he painstakingly converted into a category N2005 rally car in 2. The first competitions were mainly characterized by technical failures. The change came with a new gearbox: in 2006, Bernd won the class twice in three races.

After a forced health break, he successfully returned to international rallying in 2010. This year he took four class wins in Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Italy. A year later he repeated his impressive performance and therefore sought promotion to a higher category. Thanks to the sponsors, a Renault Clio 2012 with around 1600 hp was purchased in 250. Zanon immediately got to grips with the front-wheel drive car and in the first year won the overall ranking in the Central European Mitropa Cup, which is also known as the “European Rally Championship for Private Drivers”. The Cup, which has been held since 1965, has only been won by four-wheel drive cars in the previous 20 years. In 2013, Zanon switched back to a Peugeot and bought a Peugeot S2000. He will be back in action with this car on August 27th at the “Rally delle Alpi Orientali” in Cividale del Friuli.
