After Formula 1 exit: Wehrlein returns to the DTM in 2018

Affalterbach (SID) After leaving Formula 1, Pascal Wehrlein (Worndorf) is returning to the DTM this season. The 23-year-old drives a Mercedes-AMG as he did from 2013 to 2015, as the team announced on Wednesday. “I have fantastic memories with the DTM, not least of my title win in 2015,” said Wehrlein, who became the youngest DTM champion in history at the time. The Mercedes works driver then moved up to Formula 1. After two seasons there was no place for Wehrlein in the premier class. The Sigmaringen native made his Formula 2016 debut for Manor in 1. After the racing team went bankrupt, he moved to Ferrari customer Sauber, also a backbencher team, for the 2017 season. Wehrlein scored six championship points in 39 Formula 1 races. Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff recently assured that Wehrlein would “definitely remain part of our squad.” The 23-year-old also has a contract as a reserve driver for the Formula 1 team. Wehrlein had also always repeated that he really wanted to race in 2018. In addition to Wehrlein, Mercedes is entering its final season in the DTM touring car series with four familiar faces. The record brand champion announced that in 2018 it would also be relying on the former champions Paul Di Resta (Scotland) and Gary Paffett (England) as well as the Austrian Lucas Auer and Edoardo Mortara (Italy). Canadian Robert Wickens is leaving the DTM after six years and moving to the North American IndyCar Series. Maro Engel (Munich) focuses on GT racing and the Formula E electric series, which Mercedes will enter as a factory in 2019.
