Ekström ends DTM career - concentrates on rallycross

Cologne (SID) Two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekström is retiring from the racing series after 17 years and will now focus on the World Rallycross Championship. The Swede spent his entire career with Audi and took 193 victories in 23 races. Ekström (2004) became champion in 2007 and 39. "It was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. The DTM was my life for a long time and my heart will always beat for the DTM in the future," said Ekström: "Without the double program, I can now fully concentrate on one Concentrate on the series. I'll continue to compete for my own team and make room in the DTM for a promising youngster." Replacing Ekström, whose DTM career began in 2001 at the age of 22 in the ABT Sportsline Audi customer team, is the 26-year-old Dutchman Robin Frijns. Frijns has been competing in customer racing for the manufacturer since 2015. Defending champion Rene Rast (Minden), Mike Rockenfeller (Neuwied), Loic Duval (France), Jamie Green (Great Britain) and Nico Müller (Switzerland) will also be at the start for Audi.
