Formula 1 boss Carey asserts: “The fans are important to us”

Cologne (SID) Formula 1 boss Chase Carey has defended himself against the accusation that the new owners of the premier motorsport class are forgetting the base. “The fans are incredibly important to us, just like Europe – and by that I also mean Germany,” the 64-year-old told Sport Bild. Carey and his colleagues had recently received a lot of criticism from fans and pilots, especially because of the abolition of the Grid Girls for the new season. However, the 64-year-old defended the line of Liberty Media, which took over Formula 1 almost a year ago for around four billion euros: "Our motto is: same game, different approach. We want to create a product that includes everything the fans grew up, but that's not frozen in time. If you don't allow change, you can't grow." Carey referred to a “negative spiral” that Formula 1 has been exposed to in recent years under the leadership of Bernie Ecclestone. When Carey took over the premier class, he fired the series' long-time promoter last January. Overall, Carey sees Formula 1 in a good position. World champion Lewis Hamilton is “a very special personality”. For Carey, the traditional racing team Ferrari, whose boss Sergio Marchionne had recently threatened to leave Formula 1 for the 2021 season, is “the brightest light in this sport”. For the 2018 season, which begins March 25 in Melbourne, Carey wants "competition and drama." Last season was “too much” characterized by the duel between Mercedes driver Hamilton and Ferrari star Sebastian Vettel for his taste. A return of Fernando Alonso and McLaren to the top of Formula 1 would be a “nice scenario” for the premier class boss, as would an intervention by the young Dutchman Max Verstappen in the title fight.
