8 years after the horror crash: Kubica about to return to Formula 1

According to a report from the specialist portal Motorsport-Total.com, the Pole will be a regular driver at Williams in the 2019 season. The personnel will be officially announced this weekend on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Kubica was already a reserve driver for Williams this season.

Kubica's return to Formula 1 would be one of the most spectacular comebacks in the premier class of motorsport. The fourth-place finisher in the 2008 World Cup was considered the future world champion until he was seriously injured in a bad rally accident in February 2011. Kubica almost lost a hand and his right arm still has limited mobility to this day. Nevertheless, Kubica, who won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008, struggled for years to make a comeback. Kubica drove his last Formula 1 race to date on November 14, 2010 in Abu Dhabi.

Williams, formerly one of the top teams, has recently experienced quite a decline because the team had to rely primarily on paid drivers in the expensive Formula 1. But that should be over now.

“We want to rebuild the culture of our team,” said Claire Williams, daughter of the legendary team founder Sir Frank Williams: “We want to turn things around.” And Kubica should now help with his experience alongside the talented newcomer Russell.
