From 2019: Formula 1 should become more spectacular

The FIA announced this on Tuesday. Accordingly, the responsible committees decided on a series of changes to the aerodynamics of the cars on Monday, which should make it possible to drive close to the vehicle in front again.

Among other things, a simplified and at the same time wider front wing will be used, and the front brake channels will also be simplified and will do without winglets. For this purpose, a wider and deeper rear wing is being introduced, which at the same time increases the effect of the overtaking aid DRS (Drag Reduction System).

The aerodynamics, which are planned down to the smallest detail, especially on the front wing, the side pods and the underbody, lead to considerable air turbulence near the ground in current Formula 1 cars. These in turn have a major impact on the aerodynamics of a car behind. As a result, it is currently hardly possible for the pilots to drive closely behind the vehicle in front over several curves or even laps in order to prepare for the overtaking maneuver.

Overtaking maneuvers have been difficult so far For this reason, the number of maneuvers has been heavily dependent on the route characteristics for several years. On courses without typical overtaking points, such as long straights with a strong braking point at the end, position changes are absolutely rare under the current regulations.

The important changes for 2019 were now approved at the last moment. A majority decision is only sufficient until the end of April; from May, changes for the coming year must be unanimous. This does not exist when it comes to aerodynamics. The majority of the teams were reportedly against the changes, probably in order not to have to abandon and redevelop their own aerodynamic concept at short notice.

In addition to the teams, the FIA, the commercial rights holder, major sponsors, race promoters and track operators also have voting rights in the responsible Formula 1 commission. The aerodynamic changes that have now been decided are independent of the major rule reform planned for 2021 anyway.
