Old love never rusts: Alonso on the verge of a comeback

According to BBC information, the 38-year-old has signed a contract with his former racing team Renault for next year. The deal is expected to be made official shortly. Alonso, who won the world title with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and announced his departure from McLaren in 2018, will be a teammate of Frenchman Esteban Ocon. This means that Sebastian Vettel has also lost another opportunity for a new team. The four-time world champion is leaving Ferrari after the current season and his future is open. A Renault spokesman said in response to the speculation that the team would “not comment on rumours”. Alonso, who sat in the Renault cockpit from 2002 to 2006 and from 2008 to 2009, had repeatedly flirted with a return after his Formula 1 farewell a year and a half ago.

The eternally racing-crazy Alonso had recently tried other terrain. On his debut at the Dakar Rally in January he finished a strong 13th. At the Indy 500 at the end of August in the USA he wants to try to win the Triple Crown of motorsport. He won the Formula 1 race in Monaco and the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice.
