Doctor: Niki Lauda is “very worn out”

The ex-world champion was “very shaken,” said his treating doctor Walter Klepetko in an interview with kurier.at: “He feels the same as any other patient with a flu-like infection.” The thoracic surgeon did not confirm reports in Austria that Lauda had contracted pneumonia.

According to Klepetko, Lauda’s case is “not a classic infection. It's more than just a cold." Because of the lung transplanted in August, the situation is “not as easy as for a healthy person. The situation is complex.”

The chairman of the supervisory board of the Formula 1 racing team Mercedes is currently being intensively looked after. But the new lung works “very well,” said Klepetko. The AKH had already confirmed on Sunday that Lauda would be treated as an inpatient again.

Lauda had recently hoped for a full recovery by the end of January and was already making plans for his return to the Formula 1 racing tracks. He spent Christmas with his family in Ibiza, where he apparently caught the flu and had to cut short his vacation. “He didn't overdo it, he did everything right. “But there is always a certain risk in such a case,” said Klepetko. Lauda's immune system is still weakened as a result of the lung transplant on August 2nd.

In October, Lauda was released from the general hospital after two and a half months. The doctors treating him gave him hope for “an almost normal quality of life. He will be able to fly again, race again, drive a car again,” explained Dr. Peter Jaksch back then.
