Best time in Bahrain: Hamilton undeterred by dog and crash

Almost two weeks after winning his seventh world title in Turkey, the English Mercedes driver secured the fastest time of the day for the third-to-last race of the season in Sakhir. Hamilton relegated the Dutch Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (+1 seconds) to second place in 28,971:0,347 minutes. Third under the lights was Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was 0,365 seconds off the fastest lap.

The second session on Friday was interrupted twice with a red flag: First, Verstappen's teammate Alex Albon destroyed his company car in a crash, which he survived unscathed. Then a dog running onto the asphalt caused another interruption. After his first best time in training, Hamilton didn't allow himself to be distracted later on either. The 35-year-old wants to add three more to his ten wins this season in the final stages of this Corona emergency season. This would put him on a par with Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari wants third place Hamilton and Mercedes have already secured their top positions at the end of the year - only the Finn Bottas has not yet perfected his second place. Ferrari is miles away from such successes. The Scuderia must hope to perhaps finish third in the constructors' championship. That would bring the Italians several million euros in bonuses. “That is definitely the goal, but realistically it will be very difficult,” said Vettel’s teammate Charles Leclerc, who only finished 14th. “We need the perfect weekend.”

One will not be enough. Racing Point (154) currently has the best cards in the fight for third place. McLaren (149) and Renault (136) are behind. Only then does the Ferrari team come (130).
