Brazil: Verstappen ahead of Vettel and Hamilton

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen (Netherlands) set the fastest lap in the first free practice session in Sao Paulo. Just two weeks after his victory in Mexico, he completed the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in 1:09,011 minutes. However, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel (1:09,060) and world champion Lewis Hamilton (1:09,107) were in second and third place within just a tenth of a second.

Hamilton had already secured his fifth world title early at the last race in Mexico. But the decision in the fight for the team world championship is still open; Mercedes leads Ferrari by 55 points with two races still to go. The Scuderia would have to catch up at least 18.10 points in Sao Paulo on Sunday (13:25 p.m. CET) to still have a chance at the season finale in Abu Dhabi (November XNUMX).

A double victory for Vettel and teammate Kimi Räikkönen (Finland) would definitely be enough. However, Red Bull's current strength could also help: If Verstappen or teammate Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) moves between red and silver, Ferrari could catch up on a lot of points.

Ricciardo (1:09,395) landed in fourth place on Friday afternoon, but the Australian will be moved back five starting positions on Sunday due to a turbocharger change. Räikkönen (1:09,573) came fifth and also made a good impression: the Finn turned his fastest lap on the slower tire compound.
