The Formula 1 maturity certificate: Budapest

Sebastian Vettel: Again it was nothing like an expected victory for the Ferrari star. In Germany the four-time world champion had himself to blame; in Hungary the rain in qualifying and small mistakes made by his crew in the race were responsible. The bottom line is that at the summer break we are 24 points behind world champion Lewis Hamilton in the World Cup. Ferrari is not fully exploiting its potential, that should give Vettel and the team something to think about - even if the Heppenheimer spoke of winning second place, which is not entirely wrong given the sum of events. Lewis Hamilton: On Thursday the world champion spoke of what was probably the most difficult race of the season for his Mercedes team, and on Sunday the Brit held the winner's trophy in his hands. Of course the circumstances suited the Silver Arrows, but Hamilton is extremely hungry and has barely dropped any points for weeks. His car still has a bit of room for improvement, but the champion is already in title form.

Valtteri Bottas: The Finn defended his second place against Vettel until he gave up. Not just for himself, but also for the team and therefore his stablemate Hamilton. Only when the tires collapsed did the Finn have to let the Ferrari star go. His boss Toto Wolff described Bottas as the “perfect wingman” after fifth place. He was upset about this statement. That speaks for Bottas' ambition, but in order to win both titles he will have to come to terms with the role of number two driver.

Daniel Ricardo: The catcher of the race. From twelfth place on the grid, the Australian fought his way up to fourth place with spectacular overtaking maneuvers in a row. And that on a course where you can hardly overtake. The Red Bull driver can still be wistful: Much more would have been possible with better qualifying.

Max Verstappen: The Dutchman was really angry in the second Red Bull. After his car retired early in the race, he complained about its lack of speed and reliability. After strong previous races, the 20-year-old believes he is back in a position to dish it out. However, more humility would do him good. With five mistakes in the first six races of the season, the team always got ahead of him.

Pierre Gasly: In the shadow of the superstars, the Frenchman from the small Toro Rosso team delivered a weekend that was close to perfection. His sixth place on the grid could be attributed to the rain in qualifying. The fact that Gasly successfully defended this position in the race speaks for the class of the 22-year-old. In the hype surrounding rookie Charles Leclerc, who left without points for the third time on Sunday, the Frenchman's name is unfairly lost.
