The Formula 1 maturity certificate: Canada

SEBASTIAN VETTEL: Sebastian Vettel complained a lot and actually said everything. The Ferrari star did not back down from the fact that the victory in Canada was stolen from him by the jury. And so that everyone really understands this, Vettel did not forego the appropriate symbolism. In the parc ferme he quickly exchanged the signs for places 1 and 2. Understood?! Vettel's displeasure was understandable, but the decision to give him a five-second time penalty after a near collision with Lewis Hamilton was at least controversial. So what was actually a successful weekend, in which he was on pole for the first time in 17 races and showed a lot of fighting spirit in the race, ended with a lot of frustration and anger. The chances of the longed-for world title with Ferrari are getting smaller and smaller. 62 points after seven races is a huge achievement. A truth that was lost in the debate about Vettel's sanction is this: Under great pressure from Hamilton, Vettel allowed himself to be led into a mistake, without which the key scene would not have happened at all.

LEWIS HAMILTON: This is how you become world champion. It doesn't always have to be a show of force. The Brit was far from faultless on the Ferrari track in Canada; on Friday he hit the wall in free practice, giving his mechanics overtime, and he also missed pole. The fact that he still won for the fifth time in the seventh race of the season was the main difference to Vettel: Hamilton did not make a more serious mistake. However, he himself had provoked that of his German rival. In the future, Hamilton will have routes that will be much better for Mercedes than Canada. Who will stop him?

VALTTERI BOTTAS: Maybe his teammate Valtteri Bottas. The Finn is at least second in the World Cup, 29 points behind Vettel is manageable. With a performance like in Canada, Bottas, who himself has staked his claim to the world title, will not pose a threat to Hamilton. Canada was one of Bottas' worst races of the season. Even sixth place in qualifying was a bitter disappointment. As fourth, he at least did some damage limitation.

FERRARI: And the reds? Ferrari finally made better use of its potential and the team remained free of tactical errors and technical problems. On the long straights the SF90 was superior to all others - including Mercedes. The Scuderia must take the positive findings with them and maintain the stability they have shown. But it is also clear that the weaknesses in cornering behavior need to be remedied. Ferrari still has a lot of work to do. But a start has been made - even without a win.

LANCE STROLL: The organizer made a real effort to advertise the only Canadian pilot in the field. The 20-year-old became the namesake of a grandstand that was covered in oversized Lance Stroll lettering. At the drivers' parade before the race, Stroll threw baseball caps into the audience, signed track marshals' overalls and was pretty excited about it all. And he also did respectably in the cockpit at Racing Point. From 17th on the grid, Stroll ended up in ninth place and in the points. That was also good advertising.
