The Formula 1 maturity certificate: Montreal

SEBASTIAN VETTEL: Maybe it was all planned that way. The two victories at the start of the season were followed by a two-month dry spell for Sebastian Vettel, and the 50th success of his career took a while to come. But now everything is good: the anniversary was celebrated on a track that is charged with Ferrari tradition. Gilles Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and now Sebastian Vettel. In addition, the Heppenheimer is finally the World Cup leader again and can feel vindicated: Vettel remained calm over the past two months, he knew that the next victory was only a matter of time and that the bad luck would end at some point. And that the Ferrari is the right vehicle on the way to his fifth world title.

LEWIS HAMILTON: The world champion has two serious problems: his Mercedes is no longer the best car in the field. And he too rarely gets the most out of the Silver Arrow. In seven races this season, Hamilton has now finished behind his teammate Valtteri Bottas three times, and his victory in Baku only came about because the Finn retired late. Given the true balance of power, it is very fortunate for the title holder that he is only a measly point behind championship leader Vettel at this point.

FERNAND ALONSO: The McLaren driver received a lot of love from Formula 300 around his 1th race, but couldn't really reciprocate this feeling. Alonso seems emotionless, the years of sporting insignificance have left their mark. It is therefore quite possible that he will be gone next season and will be looking for a new adventure in the US IndyCar series. In a few days he will be able to change his mind on his longed-for trip to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Formula 1, he says, has become too predictable for him, that's the reason for the alienation - that's probably not entirely honest. There have always been good and bad teams, even in his heyday. And if Alonso were currently sitting in a Ferrari, Mercedes or Red Bull, then his love for the premier class would probably burn as brightly as ever.

THE CHECKERED FLAG: Winnie Harlow was acquitted of all guilt in Montreal that evening. “It wasn’t her fault,” said race director Charlie Whiting about the flag error shortly before the actual end of the race. The supermodel had already waved the checkered piece of fabric after the 69th lap, one lap too early. According to the protocol, the score after the 68th lap had to be used for the race result. “It was a misunderstanding between Race Control and the person actually responsible for the flag,” Whiting said. A pretty embarrassing one, I have to say. "But we're all just human."
