The maturity certificate from Silverstone

SEBASTIAN VETTEL: As the German danced onto the winner's podium at Silverstone, he perhaps asked himself this question: When should he win his fifth world title, if not this year. If a Ferrari driver races to victory in England, what speaks against triumph at the end of the year? In contrast to last season, the Scuderia has always had an answer to the tasks that Mercedes sets it. After the Grand Prix in Austria, it seemed as if the Silver Arrows were finally ready to pull away again with the aerodynamic upgrade and the new engine - and a week later, Ferrari was suddenly keeping up with the pace on the "Mercedes track" Silverstone. Vettel himself was extremely strong on Sunday, taking first place twice on his own: initially with a lightning start against Hamilton, then after the pit stops with a really strong maneuver against Valtteri Bottas. Vettel presents himself in World Cup form.

MERCEDES: The heat of the battle was probably to blame. After the race, both Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff at least suggested that Ferrari was intentionally causing accidents in order to influence the title fight. This has no basis, especially when you take a closer look at the incidents in France and England, and is bad form. However, the more time passed after crossing the finish line, the more relaxed the Mercedes representatives' comments became. And the anger is basically understandable: Ferrari caused two crashes in three races - and in between there was the Mercedes debacle with the double failure in Austria. Your nerves can be strained at times.

LEWIS HAMILTON: For the world champion it must have felt like someone was stealing his girlfriend. And lets him watch it. In front of Hamilton's eyes, Sebastian Vettel gave the Silverstone winner's trophy a big, deep kiss. The trophy on which the Englishman's name has always been engraved since 2014. That was visibly painful. Actually, Hamilton's fifth home win in a row would have been deserved because he was also the fastest man on "his" track this weekend. That at least helped us move up to second place after the early collision. Maybe Hamilton can return the favor in two weeks - that's when Vettel's home game in Hockenheim comes up. And there is a nice trophy there too.

SILVERSTONE: The last few days have been good days for Formula 1. The makers were already able to look forward to over 180.000 spectators in the full stands in Spielberg - in Silverstone they perhaps had to take a second look at the evaluation. 340.000 fans flocked to the track from Thursday to Sunday, with 140.000 watching the race alone. That was once again proof of the exceptional position of the “Home Of British Motor Racing”. And it should be clear to Formula 1 owners by now how important it is to keep this route on the calendar. Negotiations to extend the contract, which ends in 2019, are proving difficult.
