Fernando Alonso on Sainz: “Lack of respect”

“I have known Carlos for many years and I am overjoyed for him after this brilliant feat,” explains Fernando Alonso to “RaceFans”. Since Alonso's last victory in Barcelona in 2013, no Spaniard has been able to win a race in the premier motor class. With his two second places in Monza (2020) and Monaco (2021), Carlos Sainz achieved the best placement by a Spanish driver in the last eight years. Due to Ferrari's extremely poor performance last season, the podium finish was widely celebrated in the Principality. In Spain and Italy there were already voices saying that Sainz could overtake his teammate Charles Leclerc. However, according to Alonso, the reactions are exaggerated. “But I also think back to my own time at Ferrari, when I achieved nine or ten podium finishes per season. After a race there was a real graveyard atmosphere due to a second place. The only question people asked back then was, “When are you going to win again?” No appreciation for success Right now it would become clear what significance his placings and successes had during his time at Ferrari. But given his numerous victories and podium finishes, the Asturian never felt truly valued: “I achieved 97 podium places in Formula 1 over the course of my Grand Prix career, and especially at the end of my time at Ferrari I had the impression - my achievements were met with a certain lack of respect.” Despite this personal disappointment, Alonso is pleased with his successor's recent success. Although he doesn't yet see the Italian racing team on a par with Mercedes or Red Bull, the Spanish veteran is optimistic about the result in the principality: “I'm really happy for him that his first part of the season with Ferrari went so well. Ferrari is not yet as strong as Mercedes and Red Bull Racing, but Monaco was an opportunity for the Italians and they made a lot of it.”
