Ferrari fiasco is getting worse – Red Bull thanks you

World champion Verstappen significantly extended his championship lead at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Sunday after leader Leclerc had to retire with an engine failure. In second place, Sergio Pérez completed Red Bull's third double success of the year. Behind them were the Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, as Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari also failed to reach the finish line due to an early defect.

"It hurts. We have to look at it to learn from it. It's totally disappointing. It's hard to understand that," said Leclerc after the next major setback in the title race. A driving error in Imola, a broken engine in Barcelona and a strategic glitch in Monaco had recently cost him a lot of points. In the overall standings, Leclerc fell back to third place and is now 34 points behind Verstappen. The Dutchman increased his tally to 25 points with a dominant drive to the 150th win of his career. The fourth-placed Spaniard suddenly rolled out in his Ferrari. Diagnosis: hydraulic damage. A little later, the next drama for the Scuderia followed: As in Barcelona, smoke rose from Leclerc's engine. In desperation, the 24-year-old radioed to the pits on lap 20: “The power is gone.” At a snail's pace, Leclerc dragged himself back into the pit lane, climbed out of the car and waved to the audience with a sad expression. “I can't find the right words to describe it right now,” he confessed shortly afterwards on the Sky microphone. The way was finally clear for Red Bull's next double success. Vettel strong, Schumacher disappointing The eighth race of the season was hard work for veteran Vettel. Having started from ninth place after a strong qualification, he was on his way to the front when he failed to make the corner during an overtaking manoeuvre. But Vettel continued to fight and used courageous tactics with just one early pit stop. That paid off in the end.

The working day was again frustrating for compatriot Mick Schumacher. Having come last after qualifying, the 23-year-old was hoping for a bit of chaos so he could finally win his first World Cup points. He drove at the back of the field with no chance and was unable to counter the recent growing criticism after his series of accidents. The result of Baku.
