FIA President justifies himself after allegations of cover-up

“We have agreed to the confidential agreement, but we don’t want to hide anything,” the 74-year-old told the AFP news agency: “On the contrary: we would be in favor of the entire agreement being disclosed.” The FIA announced around four weeks ago that it had officially concluded its investigations into Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari team because of a possible rule-breaking engine - but has kept the result largely under wraps since then. Todt defended himself that a confidential agreement was “not an exclusive practice for motorsports”. There had been doubts from rival teams about how Ferrari used its engine, the Frenchman said: "Our technicians also had doubts, which were denied by Ferrari, and we were unable to prove a violation of the rules with certainty and in a precise manner." They then had the option of putting the case in the hands of the appeal court or reaching an agreement with Ferrari. The decision was made to reach an agreement with the team that would entail significant penalties for the Italian racing team. But Ferrari was against disclosing the content of the agreement and is now sticking to it. Led by the world champion team Mercedes, a total of seven racing teams sharply criticized the FIA because of the crude agreement and reserved the right to take “legal action”. They called for “full and proper disclosure” of the investigation results “to ensure that our sport treats all competitors fairly and equally.”
