Drama in Monaco: Leclerc out before the race

Pole man Charles Leclerc will not be able to take part in his home Grand Prix in Monaco. Although the “all clear” was initially given three hours before the start regarding a feared gearbox replacement, the Monegasque driver had to return to the pits on Sunday during the introductory lap with his defective Ferrari. Ferrari tried in vain to fix the problem on the car. Leclerc had to retire early due to a broken drive shaft. “No, no, no,” Leclerc groaned into the radio and grabbed his helmet with both hands when his car had obvious problems on the lap to the starting grid. The 23-year-old damaged his car in an accident on Saturday shortly before the end of qualifying, in which he had set the fastest time. It was immediately feared that a forbidden gearbox swap could lead to a setback. All clear, but then... Ferrari gave the all-clear on Saturday and team boss Mattia Binotto promised that they would not take any risks in the Formula 1 classic on the Cote d'Azur, where pole is more important than anywhere else due to the narrow street circuit. No defects were found, the team reported. But then everything turned out differently and Leclerc's unbelievable series of bad luck continued seamlessly at his home race. He took pole position in Formula 2 in 2017, but failed to finish in the following two races. In 2018 and 2019 he was also eliminated from the races in his Formula 1 appearances. This time he had the best chance of success thanks to first place on the grid. Leclerc will remain credited with the Monaco pole in the annals. However, second-placed Dutchman Max Verstappen in the Red Bull entered Sunday's race from the best position.
