Formula 1 confirms record season - no race in Germany

The Grand Prix on the traditional circuit is missing from the premier class calendar for the coming season, as the racing series confirmed with an official draft on the Thursday before the Belgian Grand Prix (Sunday, 15.10:1 p.m.). Accordingly, the 2020 Formula 22 World Championship will include XNUMX races for the first time in history.

The operators of the Hockenheimring had expected Formula 1 to end in 2020. “If it were to happen like that, it wouldn’t surprise us” or “incredibly shock us,” the designated Ring managing director Jorn Teske told the SID on Wednesday.

Vietnam and the Netherlands are on the program for the race in Germany. The season is traditionally scheduled to start in Australia (March 15, 2020), with the finale taking place on November 29 in Abu Dhabi. The World Council of the International Automobile Association FIA still has to give its final approval to the calendar, but this is considered a formality. The current season includes 21 races.

Millions for a race The tracks have to pay millions of dollars to Formula 1 every year in order to be able to host a race. In times of declining spectator interest, this not only became a problem for Hockenheim. This year's Grand Prix came about at very short notice because Mercedes stepped in as title sponsor.

Teske hopes that his absence from Hockenheim will not last. “We want to let Formula 1 continue to take place in Germany and will continue to seek discussions,” he said. But even under him the following applies: “We will no longer hold a Grand Prix in which we bear the economic risk.”
