Formula 1 team gets a new name

The Italian car manufacturer is expanding its rights with the venerable Swiss racing team; from the start of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne (March 17), the team will officially compete as Alfa Romeo Racing.

The name Sauber will disappear from the start lists of the premier class for the first time since the Swiss team's debut season in 1993. Since 2018, Alfa has been involved as a technology partner and title sponsor for the team from Hinwil, which continues to get its power from Ferrari. The two Italian companies are each subsidiary of the Fiat Chrysler Group.

“After our partnership with Alfa Romeo was initiated, we have made excellent progress on the technical, commercial and sporting sides,” said team boss Frederic Vasseur. The racing team, which was already operating as Alfa Romeo Sauber last season, had struggled with financial difficulties in previous years and was almost exclusively found at the back of the starting grid during this phase.

Alfa Romeo is one of the most traditional brands in Formula 1 history; Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio, as factory drivers for the Italians, won the first two world championship titles after the series was founded in 1950 and 1951. Alfa was there as an engine manufacturer from 1961 to 1979, after which it launched its own cars again until 1985.
