Formula 1 extends shutdown and cancels next race

Lewis Hamilton and Co. will not be driving in Canada as planned due to the coronavirus pandemic. The organizers of the race in Montreal announced this on Tuesday. This means that the first nine World Cup races have either been postponed or canceled. “It would have been an honor to host the first race in the 1 Formula 2020 World Championship calendar, but we unfortunately have to announce the postponement of the 2020 Canadian Grand Prix (June 12-14),” the race organizer said. “We follow the authorities’ expert instructions regarding the containment of COVID-19.” This means that the start of the premier class will not take place until the end of June at the earliest in Le Castellet/France (June 28th). So far, Formula 1 has never opened later than the end of May. The 2020 racing calendar included 22 races before the start of the season, more than ever before in the 71-year history of Formula 1 - as things stand there are still 13. The season must include eight races in order to be considered a world championship. The regular season opener in Melbourne, Australia (March 15th) was postponed just two hours before the first free practice session due to a positive corona case at the McLaren racing team. This was followed in quick succession by the rescheduling of the races in Bahrain (March 22nd), Vietnam (April 5th), the Netherlands (May 3rd) and Spain (May 10th). The Grand Prix in China (April 19), the country of origin of the coronavirus, was temporarily canceled in February. The classic in Monaco on May 24th was canceled without replacement, but the organizers in Baku/Azerbaijan (June 7th), like those in Montreal, are still officially hoping for a place on the calendar. It was only on Tuesday afternoon that Formula 1 extended the shutdown by another two weeks to 35 days.
