Formula 1: Vettel wins ahead of Bottas and Hamilton

Sakhir (SID) Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel (Heppenheim) also won the second Formula 1 race of the season in Bahrain. The 30-year-old prevailed on Sunday ahead of the Mercedes duo Valtteri Bottas (Finland) and Lewis Hamilton (Great Britain). World champion Hamilton was given a five-place penalty due to a gearbox change and had to start the race from ninth place on the grid, but secured the podium thanks to a strong comeback. "We had stress, we had pressure," said Vettel on the podium, "but when you win under these conditions, it tastes even sweeter." However, Vettel's teammate Kimi Räikkönen's second stop ruined the perfect evening for Ferrari. The Finn was already pulling away while work was still being done on his left rear wheel. According to an initial diagnosis, the affected mechanic suffered a fractured tibia and fibula, as Ferrari announced. The accident caused “mixed feelings” for Vettel and the rest of the team, as the German said: “We send him our best wishes and know that he will be well looked after.” For Räikkönen, the race was over after the incomplete stop. In the overall standings, Vettel is now 50 points ahead of Hamilton (33) and Bottas (22). For Vettel it was the 49th Grand Prix victory of his career; he had already won the season opener in Australia two weeks ago. Vettel celebrated two victories in a row for the first time as a Ferrari driver; he has been driving for the Italians since 2015. The last time he achieved two successes in a row was in the 2013 season, when he won his fourth and, to date, last world championship title with Red Bull. The highly rated Red Bull team experienced a debacle, losing both cars by the third lap due to Max Verstappen (Netherlands) and Daniel Ricciardo (Australia). The Frenchman Pierre Gasly shone in fourth place in the Toro Rosso. Nico Hülkenberg from Emmerich took a good sixth place in the Renault.
