Formula 1: Cloudburst affects third training session in France

Due to a cloudburst, Sebastian Vettel and Co. spent most of the hour-long session outside of their Formula 1 cars in the pits. The first drops had fallen just in time for the start at 13 p.m. A little later a downpour hit the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, which hardly let up until the end of the session.

The spectators in the many open stands were the main victims. Ferrari star Vettel, who went off the track on the slippery asphalt, and the other drivers immediately returned to the garages.

The best time at the beginning was set by Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes with an uninformative 1:33,666 minutes. A water leak occurred on the Finn's Silver Arrow during the second training session on Friday. This was located overnight and the defective part was replaced.

Rain chaos threatens in qualifying When two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was the first to return to the track in his McLaren around ten minutes before the end of training, the soaked fans erupted in loud cheers. At this point, all 20 drivers had only completed 56 laps in total. In the end the value increased to 68 laps.

Due to the adverse conditions, the teams were unable to collect almost any data for qualifying in the afternoon (16 p.m.). A lot of importance is attached to the starting grid at the first French Grand Prix in ten years, as the track offers comparatively few opportunities for overtaking. The weather is not expected to improve for the fight for pole position - on the contrary. “Severe thunderstorms have been announced for the middle of qualifying,” said Formula 1 managing director Ross Brawn on Sky Sports.
