Rush of speed and thrills at Silverstone

The distance: Silverstone is a real power track. And with its fast corners and the high proportion of full throttle, this also requires a fair amount of courage. Passages like “Copse”, “Maggotts”, “Becketts” and “Chapel” fascinate the pilots. Overtaking is popular in turns 6 (Brooklands) and 15 (Stowe). The high downforce demands a lot from the tires, which leads to a variety of different strategies. Capricious weather conditions are a given on the 5,891 kilometer long high-speed circuit.

The location: Silverstone is the motorsport heart of the country. It is called the “Home of British Motor Racing”. For six out of ten racing teams, the Grand Prix is a home game: they have their official team headquarters on the island, some even in the immediate vicinity of the Silverstone Circuit. Traditionally, many racing team employees and their relatives line the route. Given the easing of the Corona measures in England, around 140.000 spectators are expected at the track on race day.

The statistics: Silverstone is Lewis Hamilton's stomping ground. He was victorious there seven times. He even won six of the last eight Grand Prix on home soil - only Sebastian Vettel in 2018 and Max Verstappen in 2020 at the anniversary edition broke this impressive series.

The unforgettable race: Formula 1 ran its very first World Championship race at the former airfield in northwest London. On May 13, 1950, the winner was Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo 158. Since then, the route has been changed again and again. Now Formula 1 is stopping here for the 56th time.

This is how it went last year: Formula 1 stopped off at Silverstone twice in the midst of the corona pandemic in 2020. In the British Grand Prix, the left front tire of Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes burst on the last lap. Nevertheless, the Brit dragged himself to his seventh success at Silverstone. A week later, in the anniversary Grand Prix to mark 70 years of Formula 1, Max Verstappen relegated Hamilton to second place in the Red Bull thanks to masterful tire tactics. In view of the botched Scuderia strategy, the then Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel shouted in the direction of the pits: “You know you screwed up.” He only finished twelfth.
