Performance differences are particularly noticeable in Canada, and that's usually bad news for the competition. But what has this season taught us so far? That there is little reliance on predictions. The majority of the six races so far have not gone as expected; the Mercedes cars, for example, were not up to speed on their former parade route in China. A lot will depend on the tires again in Montreal. Three soft compounds are available and, based on recent experience, this is probably causing Mercedes a bit of stress. The world champions are having a hard time with tire management this year. In addition, due to a “quality problem”, they are not yet using the second drive version. If silver weakens, Ferrari will become the favorite. Red Bull will probably not be able to exert any real pressure with the inferior Renault drive. At least Ricciardo could probably avoid the feared grid penalty after removing his defective MGU-K energy recovery unit. At the beginning of the week, chief designer Adrian Newey was quite certain that a sanction would be imposed. Are there any other uncertainties in Montreal? Basically, a lot can happen on the 4,361 km long course. The famous marmots almost have the slightest influence. The rodents live on the beautiful, green island in the St. Lawrence River all year round, and they don't see why they should look for somewhere else to stay during the race. And so it is not uncommon for a marmot to become the secret star of the Grand Prix weekend when it hops around the track in front of the racing cars in a highly visible and death-defying manner. However, the drivers have significantly more respect for the Wall of Champions, this boundary wall in front of the start and finish, where the three world champions Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve finished their race in quick succession in 1999. The weather forecast is currently quite good: Saturday and Sunday are expected to be dry and mild. However, that can change at short notice in Montreal.
