The Dutchman lost control, shot off the asphalt into the gravel and crashed into the tire wall. However, visibly shaken, he was able to get out of the car himself and then waved to the audience. Verstappen escapes with horror “He's in shock and really shaken up,” Marko reported on Sky TV. He rated Hamilton's maneuvers as "negligent to dangerous behavior" and called for a ban. Verstappen's team boss Christian Horner complained: "This is an enormous accident and it was 100 percent Max's corner, Hamilton should never have been in this position."

The impact would have been 51g. For comparison: In Formula 1 cars, 5g can affect the drivers when cornering when driving normally. The safety car came onto the track, but the tenth race of the season was then interrupted. Verstappen's car was badly damaged and the scene of the accident had to be secured. The spectacle continued with a standing start - this time with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc in the lead, directly in front of Hamilton, whose car was also damaged in the collision. Leclerc is doing well Hamilton now had to accelerate as he had been given a ten-second penalty by the race stewards. Before him, Leclerc complained several times about power failures in his engine. On lap 28, Hamilton came into the pits, served his penalty and resumed the pursuit after a standstill of 14,2 seconds.

Leclerc's stop two laps later went smoothly, with the Monegasse setting the pace at the front. Hamilton attacked vehemently and was at it again in the last few kilometers - and even grabbed the celebrated home victory ahead of Leclerc.
