Hamilton takes pole position in Australia

The Englishman in the Mercedes confidently took first place on the grid in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, followed by the Ferrari duo Kimi Räikkönen (Finland) and Sebastian Vettel (Germany) on Sunday (7.10 a.m. CEST).

"A lap like this is not normal," said Hamilton, "it's still very intense, my heart is racing." Until the last lap of qualifying, Vettel seemed to have a good chance of taking pole, but then Hamilton turned up the heat. In the end, more than six tenths of a second separated him from his pursuers.

Vettel is confident "Yesterday I wasn't happy," said Vettel, "I didn't feel the car. But we've improved it and I'm now looking forward to the race with confidence. It's very close. Let's tackle it." Hamilton's pursuers were indeed close together. The Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen (Netherlands) and Daniel Ricciardo (Australia) in fourth and fifth place didn't miss much of second place. However, local hero Ricciardo has to return to the starting grid due to a three-place penalty because he drove too fast in free practice under the red flag.

For Hamilton it is already the 73rd pole of his career. In addition, he is at the top in Melbourne for the seventh time in total, and for the fifth time in a row. However, the 33-year-old has only won Down Under twice (2008, 2015). Hamilton also started from pole at the start of last season, but Vettel took his first win of the year.
